What I Learned After Tracking My Food Waste for an Entire Month

When most people think about food waste, they picture throwing away an entire meal or cleaning out a refrigerator full of spoiled groceries.

That wasn’t my experience.

For the month of June, I tracked every single food item I threw away. I expected to uncover one or two major instances of waste. Instead, I found something much more common: small, daily moments of waste that barely seemed worth noticing. A handful of spinach, half an avocado, some cilantro that wilted before taco night, a container of leftovers I, at one point, intended to eat.

By the end of the month, those small moments added up to 5.1 lbs of food waste.

None of it felt intentional. In fact, almost every item came with the same thought: “I totally forgot I had this.”

The Pattern Was Surprisingly Consistent

After looking through my food waste log, a few trends stood out.

  1. Fresh produce was wasted far more than anything else. Herbs, berries, leafy greens, and vegetables were often spoiled before I found a use for them.

  2. The second biggest culprit? Leftovers. Not because they weren’t good, but because life got busy. A few days passed, they got pushed to the back of the refrigerator, and eventually I wasn’t comfortable eating them anymore.

Sound familiar? If so, you’re not alone. Most food waste doesn’t happen because people don’t care. It happens because life is busy. Between work, family, errands, social plans, and constantly changing schedules, it’s easy to lose track of what’s already in your fridge.

I genuinely wanted to use the food I bought. I just didn’t always remember what I had.

That’s the frustrating part about household food waste. The information you need is hidden inside your refrigerator - inside the door, within the drawers, and tucked behind the gallon of milk. Unless you physically check every shelf, it’s easy to buy duplicates or forget ingredients until it’s too late, and they’ve gone bad.

That’s Exactly Why We Built Verdantt

At Verdantt, we believe preventing food waste shouldn’t require perfect planning or a photographic memory. Our app helps you keep track of the food you already have by organizing your groceries in one place, reminding you when items are approaching their expiration dates, and suggesting recipes based on ingredients that need to be used first.

Instead of opening the fridge and wondering, “What should I make?” you already know which ingredients deserve your attention.

Progress, Not Perfection

Will anyone eliminate food waste completely? Probably not. Life happens and plans change. Sometimes produce spoils, despite our best intentions.

But if we can prevent just a few forgotten leftovers each month or remember to use the spinach before it wilts, we are already making meaningful progress for our wallets and for the planet.

After tracking my food waste for a month, I realized food waste isn’t usually one big mistake, it’s dozens of tiny ones. And sometimes, all it takes to prevent them is a better way to keep track.
